Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
